Astronomical Regulator
Howard, E. & Co.
Boston, Massachusetts, circa 1874
Desription
From his earliest years, Edward Howard produced high quality regulators, always keeping current with the best and newest technology, including high precision features as represented on this example. The gears of this clock are so fine that the clock runs on a 20-oz. weight: the least amount of weight possible minimizes friction and wear. This impressive walnut case exhibits the finest casework of the American Victorian era: stately arched and carved door, a round hood constructed from a series of shaped layers of walnut with elegant individually carved motifs making the crest. Even the beat indicator under the temperature compensating pendulum with four vials of mercury is gracefully carved.
Regulators in fashionable cases, such as this Model 22, were used in watch and clock repair shops, banks, and other public establishments. Note the photograph of this clock in the high grade jewelry store that originally owned it. The public relied on these high quality regulators for the correct time.
