Astronomical Regulator, No. 239
Arnold & Dent (in partnership 1830–1840)
London, circa 1830
Desription
This exceptional regulator exhibits high quality features such as a thick backboard to stabilize the mechanism and a felt-lined frame to repel dust. The observatory-style dial has an outer minute track, with separate seconds and hour dials. Precision features include high count pinions, maintaining power, deadbeat escapement, sapphire jeweled pallets with micrometer regulation, zinc and steel gridiron temperature compensating pendulum. Small brass weight indicates the extreme fineness of the mechanism. The weight runs down the side in order to avoid “sympathetic vibrations” with the pendulum that could affect accuracy, a high precision feature.
This clock is the earliest recorded example of the Arnold & Dent partnership.
