Banjo Wall Clock

Willard, Simon (1753–1848)

Massachusetts, 1820

Desription

This fine post-War of 1812* era banjo clock includes a pendulum tie-down (for easy transport over large distances and difficult terrain) and T-bridge suspension (devised by Simon), as well as its original tin and glue blocks. The square bottom of the case features a reverse-painted glass panel depicting a naval battle from the War of 1812. Simon primarily used painted geometric shapes and borders on the glass panels of his cases, but he sometimes used painted scenes in his presentation clocks. Presentation clocks commemorated individuals and special events, and were made by special order.

*The War of 1812 was a conflict between the United States and Great Britain to resolve issues remaining after the Revolutionary War, such as the capture of American merchant sailors for service in the Royal Navy. Americans were elated upon winning this “second war of independence” against Britain, contributing to a growing sense of national identity.
