Brass and Iron Posted Clock Movement and Dial

Mulliken, Samuel (1722–1777)

Bradford, Massachusetts, circa 1740

Desription

The movement is thirty-hour duration with rope pull wind with its original lead weight. The single hour hand is an early feature. This very early clock dial and movement appears to be completely American-made.

Samuel Mulliken was one of a few makers who crafted posted, lantern clock-style movements. He used some iron in place of brass, which was scarce. Samuel Mulliken, his father, John, and brother, Nathaniel, were mid-18th century American clockmakers who made clocks in the English style.
