Brass Fusee Engine
Berthoud, Ferdinand
France, circa 1775
Desription
This machine is engraved on the cutter frame, Ferdinand Berthoud Fecit. The frame is decoratively shaped, befitting this renowned maker, and has a crank key adjustment, hand crank threaded advance, knurled thumb screws and beautifully made locking screws for main components all mounted on a walnut display block.
This is one of the few tools signed by this esteemed maker. In addition to his many contributions to horology, Berthoud wrote important horological papers and treatises. He provided a great service to the study of horological tools by illustrating and writing in great detail about the major horological tools of the day and how to make them.
