Mahogany "Brooklyn" Lever Spring Shelf Clock

Ives, Joseph (1782–1862)

Brooklyn, New York, circa 1825–1830

Desription

Mahogany shelf clock with iron dial, pressed brass rosettes supporting the top section, lower box with looking glass and printed maker's label inside stating in part Manufactured by Joseph Ives, Brooklyn, Long Island, New York, Warranted if Well Used. Eight-day, riveted strap brass movement with countwheel strike, Ives’ roller pinions and iron wagon spring mounted in the base.

The “looking glass” feature was likely first used by Ives, although Chauncey Jerome laid claim to it as well. Although ingenious, the wagon spring carried an immense amount of force that could cause damage should it break or malfunction. Nevertheless, this inventive design showcases the creativity of one of America’s finest horologists.
