Carriage Clock with Push Repeat
Breguet, Abraham-Louis (1747–1823)
France, circa 1801
Desription
A stunning carriage clock by Breguet with push repeat function, has decorative enamel dial, elegant pierced gilt-bronze decoration on the engine-turned enamel front. Finely cast and chased elaborate handle.
Breguet’s carriage clocks were marvels of horological art, often rich with complications. They remained a mainstay of Breguet production throughout his career and the firm that continued after his death. Carriage clocks were portable clocks, often encased in outer leather cases for protection during travel. Carriage clocks usually take a similar form: a sturdy, rectangular-shaped case, an easily visible dial, and a handle for carrying. As seen here, carriage clocks frequently have the push repeat function: when a button is pressed, the clock strikes the last hour, a convenient feature to tell the time in the dark of night.
