Carved Shelf Clock with Reverse Painting

Desription

Weight driven wooden movement with countwheel striking on a bell, rectangular mahogany case surmounted by a carved armorial cresting of a lion and a unicorn flanking a shield with the inscription Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense, an Old French phrase meaning “Evil be to him who evil thinks.” Carved half columns with an églomisé tablet below. Inside label reads Patent Clocks invented by Eli Terry, made and sold in Plymouth Connecticut by Eli Terry Jun'r.
