Chime Mantel Clock

Higgs, Robert

London, circa late 18th century

Desription

The case is finely japanned in dark blue and shaded gold with chinoiserie scenes and sprays of flowers. Arched brass dial with calendar aperture. Silvered signature plaque signed, Robert Higgs/London and a “false” pendulum aperture under the plaque. Arch contains silvered strike/silent ring. Movement chimes the quarter hours on a carillon of eight bells with eight hammers, striking the hours on a separate, larger bell.

The movement is earlier than the case, making it problematic to date this clock. Works by Higgs are in the Victoria and Albert Museum. He was also in partnership with David (or Diego) Evans. They specialized in clocks for the Spanish market.
