Desription
This military deck watch contains, 21 jewels, free-sprung lever escapement, and 40 hour winding indicator. The inner box contains a plate engraved USSB Ship Watch No 15 above Elgin serial number tag, and with another instruction plate below, "Keep this ship watch invariably horizontal with dial up." This is one of the few free-sprung American watches in pocket style case, with military USSB #248 marking on back.
American watch companies like Elgin were perfectly positioned to manufacture excellent chronometers and pocket chronometers in large numbers, owing to the best manufacturing and mass production infrastructure in the world at that time.
