Diana the Huntress Cartel Wall Clock

Clockmaker: Baillon III, Jean-Baptiste; Bronzier: Saint-Germain, Jean-Joseph

France, circa 1745-49

Desription

This extraordinary example of a gilt-bronze rococo cartel clock by the renowned bronzier Saint-Germain exhibits representative rococo features: asymmetry, ornate rococo scrolls, acanthus leaves and flower garlands, surmounted with a figure of the goddess Diana sitting on a rocky terrace. The bronzes are marked with the Crowned C, which was a tax stamp that identifies the clock as being made between 1745 and 1749. The side of the bezel is inscribed, “Given by the Reyne Sr Capperon Ecuyer Its Surgeon The Dentist 2 Mai 1749.”

The goddess Diana, the huntress, is one of the most famous and popular models by Saint-Germain. One such example is in the Louvre Museum, Paris.
