Digital Master Clock

Powers Thrasher, Samuel

New haven, Connecticut, circa 1908

Desription

This is a very inventive timepiece. The pendulum operates directly on a large escape wheel which cleverly eliminates any other gearing of the going train. The wheel operates a set of contacts every 60 seconds. These contacts in turn operate a type of solenoid that causes the dial digits to index each minute. The pendulum is electrically impulsed. The unique digital dial readout consists of three "carousels", one for the hours and two for the minutes. The system is robust and works surprisingly well.

This is an extremely rare example of the final version of this clock – only two are known to exist. Thrasher believed his digital dial was superior to a regular analog dial, and he had great hopes for its success. An early forerunner of digital timekeeping, a half century before its time.
