Dual Organ Flute Clock (“Flötenuhr”)

Bolzmann, Ludwig

Vienna, circa 1815

Desription

A very rare Viennese double organ clock. Attractive mahogany Empire style two-cabinet case with ebonized accents, ormolu mounts, and striking alabaster columns. Mahogany doors lined with curtained fabric conceal the organ mechanisms. A grande sonnerie clock with calendar is mounted on the upper cabinet.

This “Flötenuhr” (flute organ) contains an unusual and rare double organ works, both complete with bellows, sound chest, barrels, and pipes. The upper organ is accompanied by two pinned barrels, each with eight tunes, including excerpts from Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte" (“The Magic Flute”) and "Don Giovanni." The lower organ is accompanied by three barrels. These barrels are pinned in a spiral so they can play continuously for longer periods of time; but only contain one tune per barrel.
