Dwarf Tallcase Shelf Clock

Cole, James C. (1791–1867)

Rochester, New Hampshire, circa 1815

Desription

This is a very fine and rare dwarf tallcase clock. The quality of this case and brass movement confirms that fine work was being done in regions other than Boston and Philadelphia. Still, a few curiosities exist, such as the “door” on the trunk that is a later decorative alteration and does not open. Nevertheless, this is a fine, largely original piece.

James C. Cole was a distinguished maker of the New Hampshire School. He made dwarf, mirror, banjo and tallcase clocks, among others. He also repaired watches. He was an influential citizen of Rochester, acting as a bank trustee, the town clerk for thirteen years, and a representative in the legislature for two years.
