Ebonized Quarter-Striking Mantel Clock
Philip, Robert
London, circa 1780
Desription
The dial of this clock has a sweep seconds hand, a popular with the Chinese market. The arched dial plate contains two subsidiary dials: one for the phases of the moon, and the other for time regulation. The back plate is engraved with foliate scrolls and a basket of flowers. The engraving on the dial and in the arch indicates Chinese influence. Philip was attuned to motifs that appealed to the Chinese market, and he used them extensively.
