Ebony Mantel Clock with Quarter Repeat

Windmills, Joseph (1640–1724)

London, circa 1695

Desription

An excellent example of an English mantel clock from the “Golden Age.” The epitome of English sophistication and classic style: an ebony case, with tasteful gilt-brass adornments. The eight day movement has hour strike and pull quarter repeat on four bells. The backplate is finely engraved with foliate scrolls within a scored line border and around a cartouche signed, J. Windmills/LONDON. The dial exhibits classic late 17th century features: cherub mask spandrels at the corners, silvered chapter ring with sword hilt half hour markers and cross half quarter hour markers, signed J. Windmills London, strike/not strike above XII, matted center with finely engraved ringed winding holes.
