Empire Mirror Wall Clock with Alarm

Munger, Asa (1777–1851)

Auburn, New York, circa 1830

Desription

Wall clock in an Empire case with substantial gold gilt twist and ringed columns on frame. White with gold foliate reverse painted top glass surrounds the dial and mirrored bottom front glass. The pendulum bob concealed within is in the shape of a flying eagle. Inside of case is lined with wallpaper. Inner label reads A. Munger’s Patent Brass Eight Day Clocks and Time Pieces. This piece was likely a special order, with added alarm and calendar.

These handsome, popular wall clocks were likely developed by New Hampshire makers. However, New York maker Asa Munger manufactured and extensively marketed his version of these clocks.
