Enamel, Gilt and Silvered Horse Mantel Clock
Bronzier: Vion, Francois
France, 1785
Desription
An extraordinary mantel clock in the form of a horse by the renowned bronzier, Francois Vion, who was known for his animal-form clock cases. Vion had a particular eye for the combination of decorative elements into one harmonious whole. In this case, the silvered and gilt bronze horse is adorned with rhinestone decor, the base decorated with a finely rendered polychrome enamel medallion depicting a Roman mythological scene. The expertly rendered blue drape with realistic fringe is an extraordinary example of the bronzier’s art. This is a very unique and rare piece.
