Enamels

Tiffany Studios

Around 1899

Desription

Tiffany first displayed his enamels in 1899 in London. Their iridescence was highly acclaimed. Enameling is glass fused to metal at high heat. At the Tiffany firm, the Corona metal shop created copper forms. They were then painted with enamel and fired and often finished with an iridescent coating. Tiffany achieved unique effects by layering translucent colors. The firm created mostly vases, bowls, and covered boxes, many with motifs from nature. Most of the enamels have textured repoussé surfaces.
