Erato and Eros Clock
Movement: Mesnil; Bronzier: Ravrio, Andre-Antoine (1759–1814)
France, circa 1810
Desription
This exquisite gilt-bronze figural clock depicts Erato playing Apollo's lyre accompanied by Eros, seated on a plinth with cushion, the clock striking the hour and half hour on a bell. The dial is signed Ravrio, Bronzier à Paris, and the movement is signed Mesnil.
It is unusual for a bronzier to sign a dial of a clock, a testament to Ravrio’s quality and renown.
The lifelike quality and intricate detail of this work is extraordinary, one of the finest expressions of neoclassical art. You can almost feel the folds of the cushion, the drape of Erato’s gown, and the delicate strings of the lyre. The eyelashes and each strand of hair appear real. Exquisite work from a gifted artist.
