Flintlock Candle Alarm

Kerber, Joseph

Germany, circa 1750

Desription

A rare example of a flintlock candle alarm, complete with leather-covered case, circa 1750, but these unusual timepieces were in use much earlier. The alarm clock automatically lights a candle at the appointed hour. The flintlock, which has been cocked the night before, is released as the alarm bell rings, and as it strikes the steel plate, it creates a spark. The spark ignites the tinder in the small channel leading to the candle. When struck by the flint, the steel plate recoils and releases the cover which allows the lighted candle to pivot up to a vertical position.
