This model displays Galileo's practical application of the pendulum - the first known theoretical use of the pendulum for a timepiece. Galileo realized that the oscillations were constant from left to right and that the time to swing back and forth depended only on the length of a pendulum, ushering in the possibility of measuring much smaller increments of time, like a second. By suggesting the use of this property of "isochronism" for a clock escapement, Galileo opened up the possibility that timekeeping could be far more precise than previously imagined. The application of his theory, realized by Dutch mathematician Christiaan Huygens in 1656 with his design of the first working pendulum clock, was arguably the most important horological leap in history.
