Gentlemen’s Longcase Regulator

Condliff, James (in business 1818–1836)

Liverpool, England, circa 1825

Desription

An exceptionally fine gentleman’s regulator by this eminent maker of precision clocks. High precision features include Graham’s deadbeat escapement and Harrison’s maintaining power, jeweled pallets and pivot holes, and mercury temperature compensating pendulum. The entire movement along with the 12-pound pendulum is driven by only a 4-pound weight, a testament to its exceptional quality. The movement is totally void of motion work, to further reduce friction. The “observatory marks” at every five seconds are easier to read from a distance.

Although primarily used in observatories and other establishments requiring the finest accuracy, astronomical regulators were also popular with elite clientele, hence the term “gentleman’s regulator.”
