Desription

32-inch painted wood dial, weight driven movement, remote winding, deadbeat escapement, counter balance for the minute hand. Circular case surmounted by an eagle, which holds in its beak a chain of graduated gilded balls. Thirteen balls on each side commemorate the original thirteen states.

Extraordinary gallery clocks like this one were the public face of Simon Willard. They were displayed in churches, town halls and government buildings. There is one of Willard’s gallery clocks in both the United States Capitol and the West Wing of the White House.
