Gilt-Brass Quarter Striking Mantel Clock with Two Front-Mounted Pendulums

Creator unknown

Austria, circa 1750

Desription

A unique traveling clock in its original custom leather traveling case fitted with a brass foliate and strapwork pierced fret at the back. Unusual two-pendulum movement, which may have been experimental. The movement has fusee and chain for the going train and standing barrel for the strike. The anchor escapement has two pallets mounted on separate arbors connected by pinions, each with a light pendulum and bob with strike stopwork and two hammers. The drum case has the bell mounted to the back, the whole raised on a turned stem with a scrolled tripod foot.

The “Zappler” style clock with pendulum on the front was made in Austria from the mid 18th century through the 19th century. Some were also made in Germany in the latter 19th century.
