Grafton Wall Clock
Willard, Simon (1753-1848)
Grafton or Roxbury Massachusetts, circa 1780
Desription
One of the rarest clocks to survive from 18th century America, Grafton wall clocks ran thirty hours and cost ten dollars each, still a steep price, but one-fifth the price of a tallcase clock, thus appealing to a larger market. This compact clock contained a robust, simple movement and passing strike that did not require a separate strike train. Its durability and size suited people who were on the move across difficult terrain and who mostly lived in modest homes. The new design meant clocks would soon become a staple in American homes and not just a luxury item for the elite.
