Grande Sonnerie Vienna Regulator
Silberbauer, Gottfried
Vienna, circa 1858
Desription
An excellent example of the serpentine Biedermeier style Vienna regulator. The stately straight lines of the earlier periods give way to softened, serpentine curves. Top cresting, bottom, and side
adornments are finely carved in contrasting ebony wood. Finely cast “pie crust” bezel around the one-piece enamel dial signed, Gottfried Silberbauer, in Wien. Three-train grande sonnerie movement.
The craftsmanship of the mid 19th century Viennese cabinetmakers is extraordinary, both in artistry and immense variety. Due to the Viennese craftsmen’s loyalty to hand craftsmanship, they continued
to make one-of-a-kind items, well after standardization became the norm. The stunning variety of Vienna regulator cases is a testament to that fact.
