Hour and Quarter Hour Repeating Bracket Clock
Gaudron , Antoine (1640–1714)
Paris, France, circa 1690
Desription
An excellent example of a completely bronze French mantel clock which became more popular as the period progressed. Finely chased and elegantly decorated, with a twelve-piece chapter ring, made of decorative numerals on enamel plaques, as well as the signature cartouche. The detachable top pediment is surmounted by an urn which conceals the hammers and bells for the strike and quarter hour repeat.
Antoine Gaudron became a master in Paris in 1665. In 1690 he was appointed Jure and in 1698 he took his sons into business to deal in "Clocks, semi-precious stones, pictures, mirrors, porcelain, bronzes and jeweles”. He was a wealthy businessman and was highly regarded by his peers, Julien Le Roy among them.
