Hour Striking Pendule Religieuse Clock

Hubert, Jean a Rouen

Rouen, France, circa 1660

Desription

This very early clock is similar in design to the earliest pendulum clocks. The case is a simple ebonized wood box, and the dial plate is covered in velvet. Features in brass include the chapter ring, hands and signature cartouche.

Jean Hubert was a clockmaker in Rouen, France. Rouen was a small but vital hub of the watchmaking industry during the 16th and 17th centuries. French horology was concentrated in Paris, but talented clock and watchmakers lived in other regions of the country.
