Italian Neoclassical Ormolu-Mounted White Marble Mantel Clock

Valadier, Luigi and Giuseppe attrib. (Casemaker)

Italy, circa 1780

Desription

A rare example of an Italian-made marble clock in the neoclassical style with attractive ormolu mounts on a marble case with a rounded top, surmounted with an exceptional gilt eagle finial. The clock rests on four recumbent gilt lions, on a black marble base. Exquisite work from a premier Roman bronzier.

Striking similarities of this clock to studio drawing from the Valadier workshop, as well as clocks with almost identical motifs such as the ormolu, recumbent lions, their signature black base, the rounded top, ormolu eagle and other features supports this attribution.
