Lantern Clock with Alarm
Knibb, Joseph (1640–1711)
England, circa 1665
Desription
An exceptionally fine, three-quarter sized lantern clock signed Joseph Knibb Oxon Fecit, circa 1665. This is a rare example of Joseph Knibb’s pre-London skills, talent, and unique aesthetics. This clock is a rare specimen foreshadowing Knibb’s greatness to come and gives us a glimpse into his extraordinary early work.
The wafer-thin frets are delicately engraved in a tulip pattern reflecting the Dutch influence in early English clockmaking. Even though lantern clocks were the domestic workhorses, Joseph Knibb did not skimp on the finer details: unique engraving, elegantly turned intricate finials, superior workmanship throughout.
