Laterndluhr Wall Clock with Calendar
Fertbauer, Phillip (1763–1820)
Vienna, circa 1810
Desription
An early Laterndluhr by this exceptional maker. The cherrywood case is in a style often used by Fertbauer with solid sides typical of this period, and a sliding glazed door with brass stringing. The case
is exceptionally thin to the wall, only 4 inches deep.
The eight-day bell striking movement is unique: This movement strikes on a bell mounted on the backplate, hidden in the mounting block and backboard of the case. This system was used by
Fertbauer on almost all of his striking clocks. Fertbauer's own deadbeat escapement, which reduces friction over traditional escapements, was more complicated to produce but makes the
extraordinary shallow depth of the case possible.
