Longcase Clock, No. 633

Graham, George (1673–1751)

London, circa 1725

Desription

This excellent clock has a very substantial and robust eight day time and strike movement numbered 633 on the back plate. The finely executed rack and snail striking system was developed by Tompion/Graham. The dial with pin hole adjustment is signed Geo Graham, London. The lozenge (diamond-shaped) half hour markings are a design motif originated by Graham, and a personal favorite. The same motif appears at the end of the signature. The clock has bolt and shutter maintaining power. The hexagonal boss for the hour hand was a feature used by Tompion and Graham, a very fine feature. The dial plate contains a number of square screws on the dial plate, rare to be extant.

George Graham used the square dial longer than many London clockmakers. The fashion had shifted to arched dials after 1715 but you will find square dial longcase clocks of this caliber by Graham after that date.
