Longcase Clock with “Oyster” Veneer

Quare, Daniel (1647–1724)

London, circa 1706

Desription

A fine example of the craftsmanship of Daniel Quare, a contemporary of Thomas Tompion and Joseph Knibb and one of the eminent makers of this period. The case is distinctive, with “oyster” shaped veneer of olivewood. A glass lenticle in the trunk door shows the movement of the pendulum. Excellent provenance, with a label inside of case door that reads, Iden Collection, Inventory No. 3027, Daniel Quare and circular label which reads Robert C. Hills Collection, No. 11. Dial is signed, Daniel Quare, London on the bottom of the chapter ring. Spandrel design of a crown and scepter held by two cherubs is said to have been developed in honor of the ascension of Queen Anne in 1702, and was a particular favorite of Daniel Quare.
