Longcase Clock with Quarter Hour Strike
Knib, Joseph (1640–1711)
London, 1680
Desription
This important longcase clock by this renowned maker has a latched dial signed Joseph Knibb Londini fecit along the lower edge, The finely cast and chased gilt cherub spandrels and narrow chapter ring exhibit Knibb’s distinctive delicate style.
This is an extraordinary clock with very rare features: split plates, quarter hour striking, perfectly proportioned case, raised hood with spoon locking: when the trunk door is closed it pushes the "spoon" forward, thereby locking and securing the hood - an early feature which seldom survives.
The artful simplicity of the polished brass behind the high quality spandrels draws focus to their beauty. Also, a hallmark of Knibb's craftsmanship was the decorative flourishes he added to practical parts, which are often lost through the passage of time. It is very rare to find such parts intact, after over 300 years.
