Longcase Clock with Quarter Hour Strike w/ Oyster Veneer

knibb, Joseph (1640-1711)

London, circa 1685

Desription

An exceptional example of the impeccable taste and skill of Joseph Knibb. This longcase clock exhibits the finest features of this period: latched dial with elegant winged cherub spandrels and date aperture, signed Joseph Knibb, Londini Fecit. The eight-day movement has six latched pillars, with quarter hour strike on two bells and an outside countwheel. The exquisite case with architectural broken pediment is veneered with oyster-cut olivewood inlaid with parquetry bands in a bold elongated and rounded design, the sides inset with pendulum apertures.

Joseph Knibb demanded the finest castings and chasings of spandrels and other brass motifs, often with effective blank space on the dial plate to highlight the workmanship.
