Longcase Observatory Style Regulator

Frodsham, George (working from 1825)

London, circa 1850

Desription

An excellent example of a mid 19th century astronomical regulator, in a fine brass bound mahogany case with an architectural pediment. Four substantial brass Doric columns frame three heavy beveled glass panels, with an inlaid hinged brass winding cover over the winding hole of the center panel, in order to avoid dust in the mechanism. Massive iron brackets support the movement and the pendulum, to minimize outside effects. The observatory-style dial has an outer minute track enclosing the twin subsidiary dials for the seconds with observatory marks and the Roman hours. Precision features include high count pinions, deadbeat escapement with jeweled pallets, and long steel crutch supporting a mercury temperature compensating pendulum.

George Frodsham is recorded as working from 1825. He succeeded his father William James (the grandson of the renowned William.) The Frodsham family dynasty of excellent clockmakers and chronometer makers began in the mid 18th century and continued into the 20th century. The name represents some of the finest horologists of the 19th century.
