Louis XV Longcase Clock with Marquetry

Movement: Lepaute, Jean-Andre (1720–1789); Casemaker: Petit, Nicolas (1732–1791)

France, 1772

Desription

This longcase clock is the epitome of the very finest French casework. Graceful curves, brilliant ormolu mounts, and exquisite marquetry in an elegant crosshatch pattern are highlights of this extraordinary work. It encompasses the freer rococo style, yet still maintains a stately elegance. Nicholas Petit produced a series of these magnificent longcase clocks, each exhibiting individual flourishes. When Jean-Andre Lepaute wanted a marquetry case, he exclusively went to Nicolas Petit. Their collaboration produced some of the finest clocks in both beauty and horology of this period.

Jean-Andre Lepaute (1720–1789)

The Lepaute family formed an important dynasty of Parisian clockmakers from the 18th century onward. Jean-André Lepaute was an exceptional maker and is counted among the savants of French horology. He not only created clocks of exquisite beauty but also made significant contributions to the sciences of horology and astronomy. He was known especially for his experimental escapements.
