Mantel Clock in Zitan Wood Case with Automata

Guangzhou Workshops

Guangzhou, China, circa 1875

Desription

Chinese mantel clock with quarter hour strike on bells and automaton figure and glass rods simulating a waterfall. The case is fashioned from precious zitan wood, a favorite wood of the Emperor, with ornate mother-of-pearl inlay throughout as well as the carved top crest, and gilt-bronze pineapple finials on the four corners as well as atop the crest, and large gilt-bronze ball feet, all on a zitan base. The dial contains elegant cast and chased spandrels and a sweep seconds hand, indicative of the Chinese market.
