Mantel Clock with Enamel Dial and Republican Calendar

Clockmaker: Drouot; Enameler: Dubuisson, Etienne (1731-1815)

France, circa 1800

Desription

The smaller numbers around the perimeter of this painted enamel dial represent the days of the month according to the Republican calendar. The case features beautiful neoclassical symbols, including wreaths, swags, bows, quivers, and feathered arrows. Atop the case, a gilt-bronze cherub seated next to two doves plays a trumpet.

Little is known about the Parisian clockmaker Drouot. Dubuisson painted many beautiful enamel dials throughout his career.
