Master Clock

Jamin Jr., C.D.J.

The Netherlands, circa 1925

Desription

This clock was designed to be used as a master clock. It uses a modification of the gravity arm type of pendulum impulse mechanism. By means of an unusually complicated arrangement of contacts operated by the pendulum, a gravity arm is set and reset using solenoids as the pendulum moves. The dropping of the gravity arm once every two seconds keeps the pendulum in motion. The design required little maintenance.

C. D. J. Jamin, Jr. was the son of a well-known Dutch chocolatier but he had no interest in the family business, pursuing engineering and eventually horology. He designed and patented some unusual and interesting clocks, a few of which were manufactured in limited numbers. His most famous endeavor was the "hot wire" clock which he sold to Zenith which manufactured them for a number of years. It was a clever design and enjoyed a limited success.
