Month-Duration Laterndluhr with Skeletonized Dial
Matushka in Iglau
Vienna, circa 1825
Desription
Because of the extraordinary amount of decorative work on the movement and pendulum, this Laterndluhr was likely made for a major exhibition. Early Laterndluhr features on the case include a
flat top pediment, no side glass on the bottom, and a sliding bottom door. The extraordinary dial is skeletonized to reveal the movement. Each hand is individually set. The manual maintaining power takes
the form of a spring lever partly in the shape of a bird with a sprung beak that engages with one of the train wheels. The main barrel is very thin to achieve the long duration. It is adorned with ornate
steelwork. The mock gridiron pendulum is adorned with blued and silvered steelwork. The center of the silvered pendulum bob is decorated with a blued steel star.
