Month-Going and Striking Skeleton Clock with Calendar and Moon Phases

Jeune, Verneuil

France, circa 1820

Desription

This skeleton clock from the Restoration period (1814–1830) is signed, Verneuil J.ne H.ger Mecanicien on the enameled chapter ring of the main dial. The top dial depicts the moon phases. The smaller dial on the left indicates the day and its corresponding deity. The dial on the right shows the month and its corresponding zodiac sign. The impressive gridiron pendulum is prominent. The piece is an elegant combination of science, technology and aesthetic refinement.

Verneuil Jeune specialized in skeleton clocks of the highest quality. His clocks all have calendar dials, marble plinths, and a pleasing aesthetic, but they vary in complexity. Little is known about this maker.
