Month-Going Laterndluhr with Perpetual Calendar

Fuchs, Joseph

Vienna, circa 1795

Desription

This rare and early month-duration Laterndluhr is an important early link in the evolution of the Laterndluhr style clocks. The early style case has a round lift-off hood, a slim and glazed trunk and an
attractive octagonal base. The case is most unusual by having a backboard which has always been painted the color of the wall on which the clock is hung. The effect of this is to make it look as though there is no back to the case, adding to the lightness and airy feeling of this style.

The movement has much thicker plates reminiscent of English work, reflecting the transition from the traditional to the later innovations of the Viennese. The movement has a fully perpetual calendar, exhibiting the skill and knowledge of this maker. This was exceptionally rare in Viennese clocks at this stage.
