Musical Automaton Table Clock

Borrell, Jean Henri (working 1780–1821)

London, circa 1780

Desription

This impressive gilt-brass clock has an independently driven music box that can play two tunes per revolution. The drum clock case sits atop four scroll-shaped brackets that are joined by swags, which were a popular motif in the Chinese market. Notice how the decorative fountain’s glass rods resemble flowing water when they rotate.
