Musical Longcase Clock in Japanned Case
DuChesne, Claudius (d. circa 1730)
London, circa 1715
Desription
This exquisite clock by famed Huguenot clockmaker Claudius DuChesne exhibits the height of style and function of the period. The arched dial includes subsidiary dials for Sonne/Silence, day/symbol, lunar date enclosing an aperture for moon phases, month with maximum days, and tune selection. The three-train movement has trip repeating striking and plays one of two melodies using twenty-four hammers on twelve bells. The stunning japanned case with circular lenticle to show the movement of the pendulum bob is decorated in shades of gilt lacquer on a simulated tortoiseshell ground. The popular chinoiserie landscape includes figures, trees, and birds.
