Musical Mantel Clock
Norton, Eardley (1728–1792)
London, circa 1772
Desription
Eardley Norton is renowned for his carillon and astronomical clocks. This clock is a fine example of the exquisite craftsmanship in musical clockmaking in the latter half of the 18th century. The eight-day movement plays six tunes on a carillon of eight bells with eighteen hammers. The ebonized case has a bell top shape. The delicate, fine lines of the side frets represent the emerging Sheraton style of architecture, which is known for its elegance and refinement. The dial is signed, Eardley Norton, London No. 1063. Note the finely engraved swag at the bottom of the arch and the fine foliate engravings on either side of the arch. There are two silvered, finely engraved rings in the arch, one for chime/not chime and the other for the six-tune selector.
