Musical Mantel Clock for the Turkish Market
Markham, Markwick; Perigal, Francis
London, 1800
Desription
An extraordinary example of an English clock for the Turkish market. The exquisite tortoiseshell case is adorned with finely cast and chased caryatids on the four corners, and a turquoise-lined ormolu dome at the top surmounted with a flambeau finial. The dial is a magnificent work of art: White enamel dial is signed Markwick Markham/Perigal, London, contained on a silver ground enamelled with flowers and stylized leaves. Chime/silent and tune selection dials are contained in the arch. Four tunes play on a nest of bells, strikes the hour on a further bell, the backplate with engraved border and signed as the dial.
