Guangzhou Workshops

Guangzhou, China, circa 1875

Desription

Chinese mantel clock with quarter hour strike on bells and automaton figure in the arch is flanked by glass rods simulating a waterfall behind finely pierced and painted metal birds and foliage. The elegant dark sandalwood case contains ornate mother-of-pearl inlay throughout as well as the carved top crest, and gilt-bronze pineapple finials on the four corners as well as atop the crest, and large gilt-bronze ball feet, all on top of a sandalwood base. The dial contains elegant cast and chased spandrels and a sweep seconds hand, indicative of the Chinese market.
