Brass movement connects to a six-inch globe. Globe is signed, Joslin’s containing the latest discoveries, Boston, Gilman Joslin 1860, drawn and engraved by W. B. Annin. The hour ring above the globe with a fixed pointer to mark the hour. The minutes are shown below the globe. An original printed label inside the case is inscribed, Timby’s Solar Timepiece, Patented 1863, No. 337.
Theodore Timby (1819–1909) of Baldwinsville, New York, patented this clock in 1863. The clocks were made under license by Dr. L.E. Whiting of Saratoga Springs. About 600 were produced in total. The half-completed pieces were shipped to Boston where Gilman Joslin, a globe maker, added the globe. Timby’s globe timepiece reflected the interest in exploration popular in the mid-19th century.
